£49,000-a-week player knows Tottenham want to sign him as talks begin

Tottenham are now on the hunt for a new right-back after AC Milan confirmed the signing of Emerson Royal.

Ange Postecoglou still has Pedro Porro to cover that area of the pitch, while Archie Gray is also able to play on the right of defence – although Spurs are pushing to sign a natural option to deputise for the Spain international nonetheless, with the player in question aware that Tottenham want him.

So, who are Spurs trying to sign as a replacement for Emerson Royal? Let’s take a look…

Vanderson knows Tottenham want to sign him

A story from Sports Zone now states that Monaco No.2 Vanderson is aware that Spurs are hoping to sign him before transfer deadline day on Friday 30th August.

The man is, however, yet to make a decision on his future despite knowing Tottenham admire him.

It comes after Bruno Andrade revealed that Tottenham have just opened talks to sign Vanderson – and the French outfit expect a £34m bid from Spurs.

Now, we would take Andrade’s story with a pinch of salt, as it feels unlikely that Postecoglou would spend £34m of his budget on a backup defender, although stranger things have happened.

The 23-year-old South American made 20 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

Vanderson – who Manchester United looked at before settling on Noussair Mazraoui – has a contract running until July 2028 at Monaco, hence the fairly steep asking price.

Talks with Monaco suggest Ange Postecoglou has a plan for Archie Gray at Spurs

As aforesaid, it feels strange that Tottenham would spend £34m to sign Vanderson with Gray already in N17 – someone who can cover for Porro.

However, Tottenham’s decision to open talks with Monaco suggest that Postecoglou has no intention of using the England U21 international on the right of defence, where he made appearances for Leeds last season, and sees him exclusively as a midfielder.

Some people in football are said to believe Gray can become as good as Declan Rice in midfield, so Postecoglou may be on to something here.
