34 touches, no assists… Brendan Rodgers’ verdict on ‘outstanding’ Celtic player was absolutely correct

Brendan Rodgers took the unusual step of calling out one of his Celtic players for his performance in the 4-1 win over Hibs last night.

Mikey Johnston was given a rare start by the Celtic manager after he was ‘outstanding‘ against St Johnstone on Sunday.

The winger was subbed around the 60-minute mark which led to Rodgers telling Johnston that ‘he needs to do more‘ if he wants to continue being selected for the Cel✤tic first team.

Was it a harsh assessment by the Celtic manager? Was Johnston actually that bad that he had to be singled out like that? Peter Grant thought he did okay.

Let’s take a look.

Mikey Johnston’s performance vs Hibs was poor

For all the hype and excitement surrounding Johnston ꦐgetting his first start for Celtic this season, the 24-year-old winger really struggled to make any kind of impact.

Rated a 6.9 by , Johnston was the lowest-scoring outfield player by the football ratings website. On the pitch for 63 minutes, the Republic o⛦f Ireland international didn’t make any material difference💫 to the game.

With just 34 touches, Johnston didn’t get himself invo💜lved enough. The winger only made one attempt to dribble past his opponent and that was unsuccessful. He also made⛎ two crosses into the box. Neither found their man.

On top of that, Johnston never created any of the assists for the four goals even though he only created one chance for his teammat🃏es.

Defensively, he wasn’t much better. With no tackles completed, Johnston made just one interception, one defensive action and one ball recovery. He also only won one🐷 out of his two duels against a Hibs opponent.

And when you compare that to what Luis Palma achieved in the same game, it is little wonder that Rodgers cal𒁏led him out.

Johnston has much more to do to prove he can be a part of Rodgers’ team and if he gets another opportunity to start against Kilmarn🌠ock, he had better make sure he takes it.
