Zabaleta set to trigger automatic one-year West Ham contract extension
Pablo Zabaleta is just a matter of games away from triggering a one-year extension to his West Ham contract,
They that if the Argentine plays in 60 per cent of the Hammers’ games, he will automatically be rewarded with an extra year on the deal that is worth £75,000 per week.
Zabaleta : “If I play in 60 per cent of the games, automatically the contract can extend for another season. This is something I am not too far away from. If I play a few more games, I will have a chance to sit with the manager and the club and decide what to do.
“I haven’t decided what to do. I don’t want to rush myself or the manager. The club brought me in to play for two years and this is all I wanted because I am 34 now. If I do stay then I would understand I would have a different role, not to play as much. I know in myself that I cannot play the same amount of games.”
West Ham were likely hoping that Sam Byram or Ryan Fredericks would be ready to take over the right-back mantle by now, but the situation as it is means that Zabaleta is still vital to their plans.
Ideally, he would take a back seat next season – if he chooses to extend – and allow a younger man to play the majority of the games.
