Darren Bent and Andy Goldstein discussed potential transfer targets for Newcastle United following their takeover, and the former has named a very big player as someone Magpies fans would love.

Mike Ashley’s departure is a joy to every Newcastle fan out there. They’ve suffered for years under the Sports Direct boss, but with new, wealthy owners now in, supporters can dream of achieving something special.

Jokes about signing Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and even Lionel Messi have been swirling around social media, but that’s not going to happen, at least not anytime soon. However, the Magpies could really make a statement signing to start things off in January.

Darren Bent: Newcastle fans will love Lautaro Martinez

Talksport host Goldstein suggested that Newcastle should go for a proven Premier League player, someone like James Ward-Prowse. Bent agreed that the Southampton man would be a good signing, but he believes that the Magpies need to make a statement first.

Goldstein said on : “Ward-Prowse is the type of player they could go for.”

Bent responded saying: “They’re going to have to start somewhere and they’re going to have to make a splash signing, when you’ve got that money, I don’t think he’s going to be the marquee signing.

“If they can get Ward-Prowse in, these kind of good Premier League players, then of course, but the first signing that Newcastle fans are going to want to see is going to be a superstar like a [Lautaro] Martinez from Inter Milan.”

Can Newcastle sign Martinez?

Well, with the money Newcastle’s new owners have, they can probably buy anybody in the world, but the chances of the Magpies signing Martinez from Inter in January or in the summer is very close to zero.

The Argentine was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League with Arsenal and Spurs named as his potential suitors. even claimed that Inter Milan had accepted a fee of over £60 million from Spurs, but that move didn’t materialise.

Martinez stayed at Inter and he’s set to extend his deal there very soon. The Nerazzurri’s CEO, Giuseppe Marotta, confirmed this week that the Argentine’s new contract is ‘almost done’ and it will be announced shortly. ()

That ends Bent’s wishes for Newcastle, but there are plenty of other top players out there who the new owners can bring in.
