‘You’ll get beat’: Flaw in Liverpool star’s game identified by EPL legend
Ashley Cole knows what it takes to be a first-choice full-back for England.
That’s no longer a description that can be applied to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who missed the cut for his country’s recent run of games.
While clearly having the talent to excel on the international stage, the Liverpool man’s form this season has not been good enough to convince Gareth Southgate.
With the clock ticking ahead of Euro 2020, it’s vital that the right-back show signs of improvement if he wishes to be included in Southgate’s squad.
Unfortunately for the 22-year-old, he made a costly error in his latest appearance for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
It was Alexander-Arnold’s header that inadvertently set up Marco Asensio for Real Madrid’s second goal in a 3-1 Champions League quarter-final victory for Los Blancos.
That came after he lost his man Vinicius Junior for the opener.
There’s no doubting the player’s ability in an attacking sense, but defensive lapses such as those on show in Madrid on Tuesday night are doing little to advance his England cause.
Former Arsenal and Chelsea left-back Cole, who won 107 caps for England, on Wednesday afternoon which pinpointed an aspect of Alexander-Arnold’s game in which he believes there is room for improvement.
In an accompaniment to a video of Alex Scott and Jamie Carragher discussing the Liverpool man, Cole said: “The area he can improve would be his feet patterns-movements which allows him to turn and match his opponents run or dribble
“If you can’t move them quick enough it doesn’t matter how fast you are you will get beat.
“Foot patterns will get you in defensive positions to turn quick.”

Liverpool return to Premier League action on Saturday when they welcome Aston Villa to Anfield, with Klopp’s men hoping to avenge October’s humiliating 7-2 defeat at Villa Park.
