‘You can’t have that’… ESPN pundit says two Chelsea players are playing so badly right now

ESPN pundit Steve Nicol has criticised Chelsea stars Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo after their performance against Manchester United last night.

Mauricio Pochettino‘s side were viewed by some people as the favourites to win the game, but they were completely outclassed by Manchester United, who managed 28 shots against them. Caicedo and Fernandez were both really poor.

ESPN pundit Steve Nicol blasts Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo

Chelsea have spent a lot of money on new signings since Todd Boehly took over the club, and no two players have cost more than Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

The Ecuador international was brought in from Brighton in the summer for a British record fee of £115 million (). Fernandez, on the other hand, joined in January, and he cost an eye-watering £106.8 million ().

When you spend more than £220 million on two midfielders, you would expect them to make the middle of Chelsea’s side as strong as most other top clubs in the world.

However, neither Caicedo nor Fernandez have managed to completely dominate a game yet, and Nicol is not a fan of either of them.

He said on : “We spoke yesterday about Declan Rice. £100 million for Declan Rice. That’s a £100 million footballer. Caicedo and Fernandez – you wouldn’t pay £100 million for the two of them right now.

“They are miles away from a guy like Declan Rice. If you’re going to spend £200 million on two guys in the middle of the park, they better be dominating some of the game. We can’t expect them to dominate the whole game but at least a part of it.

“Since the two of them signed, I don’t remember them dominating anybody. You can’t have that when you spend £200 million.”

Caicedo and Fernandez have to improve

Chelsea’s transfer strategy since Todd Boehly’s arrival has been to sign young players with huge potential. Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo definitely check that box.

However, both players haven’t been great in a Chelsea shirt, and that is a real concern. Caicedo even featured in TBR’s worst Premier League XI this season

Manchester United completely dominated the Blues last night and deservedly won the game. They could’ve and probably should’ve scored two or three more goals too.

Caicedo and Fernandez have to do much better in the coming games if Chelsea want to stand any chance of finishing in one of the European places this season.
