‘You cannot say that’: Mikel Arteta makes surprise claim about Guendouzi’s Arsenal future
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Matteo Guendouzi don’t see eye to eye, everybody knows that already.
The Frenchman was banished from the Arsenal squad after his altercation with Neal Maupay at the end of the 2019/20 campaign. He was shipped out on loan to Hertha Berlin in the following summer.
The Gunners moved Guendouzi on to Marseille at the start of this season on loan. Many revealed that the Ligue 1 giants are obligated to sign him on a permanent deal, while a few others believe it’s only an that they may or may not take up.
That gave rise to a question in Arteta’s press conference today about Guendouzi potentially returning to Arsenal at some point this season. Arteta ruled that out, but he refused to say that the Frenchman has played his last game for the Gunners, which is surprising.

The Gunners boss said, as per : “For right now, he’s gone for the season.
“I think he’s having a really good spell at Marseille, and it’s part of the plan we made with him. He’s continued with his development and we’ll make a decision at the end of the year.”
Asked if Guendouzi has played his last game in an Arsenal shirt, Arteta said: “I think you cannot say that about a player that is owned by the club.”
Does Guendouzi have a future at Arsenal?
Football is a funny old game and anything is possible, but we’re pretty confident that the Frenchman isn’t coming back to the Emirates to play under Arteta again after everything that has happened.
Guendouzi has had a decent start to life at Marseille. There have been rumours about indiscipline, but there’s nothing that has forced Jorge Sampaoli to do what Arteta did a couple of years ago.
If things go as planned for Arsenal, Arteta and Guendouzi, the midfielder will join Marseille on a permanent deal next summer. That is a shame as he possesses so much talent, but it’s the best thing for all parties involved.
