Yerry Mina the unsung Everton hero during flying 2020/21 start

Everton have got off to a flyer during the 2020/21 campaign and one man who is slipping quietly under the radar is defender Yerry Mina.

The Toffees have won all of their opening four games, with Carlo Ancelotti’s men sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, James Rodriguez and Allan have rightly claimed the main accolades, but Mina is showing signs of finally fulfilling his promise at Everton.

The Colombian international cost the Toffees in 2019, catching the eye during the World Cup where Colombia lost to England in the last 16.

Prior to this season, the centre-back had played 48 times for the Toffees, but injuries and a lack of consistency had hampered his chances of success.

Right now the 26-year-old is showing exactly what he is capable of – with the statistics backing him up as one of the club’s best performing players.

Mina has played 90 minutes in all four of Everton’s games in the Premier League, excelling in each one.

Statistically speaking

he has a pass success ratio of 93.4% which remarkably is the highest of anyone in the current squad who has played 90 minutes or more this season.

Alongside his magnificent passing statistics, he also averages 3.5 aerial wins in each game, a figure which is again the highest in the current squad with the exception of Calvert-Lewin.

The enforcer is also top of the pops when it comes to clearances from the back – with his total around 4.5 per game.

It’s taken the man with 24 caps for his country some time to get going for sure but he’s really making an impact now.

Ben Godfrey arrived on deadline day from Norwich City and with Michael Keane also playing well, he faces a fight to get in the team.

On current form Mina is undroppable and if he carries on he could prove to be Everton’s surprise package this season.
