Xabi Alonso made a private ‘phone call’ to ‘incredible’ Liverpool player to convince him to join Bayer Leverkusen
Liverpool have had a lot of things go against them over the last few months.
Firstly, after Jurgen Klopp announced that he would be leaving Anfield, the Reds had to draw up a shortlist to replace him. Xabi Alonso was Liverpool’s top target.
However, Alonso snubbed Liverpool🎐 and decided to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, with whom he won the Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season.
🅺Arne Slot then got the job and early signs have been positive. However, Liverpool haven’t made a single signing yet in this window.
Now, Alonso could sign one of their players.
Xabi Alonso made a ‘phone call’ to Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg
Sepp van den Berg🐼 returned to Liverpool after a successful loan spell at Mainz in the 2023/24 season.
🔯The ‘‘ Dutchman, who joined the Reds all the way back in 2019, was viewed as a huge talent at the time, but he hasn’t had too many senior opportunities at Anfield.
ꦜThat’s why he has spent loan spells away from the club, and it is also why he has been made available for a transfer this summer.
A number of 🍨clubs are interested in signing Van den Berg, including Bayer Leverkusen, who are managed by Liverpool legend Alonso.
ꦆNow, Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has shared an update.
⛎He has revealed that Alonso made a ‘phone call’ to Van den Berg in recent days in a bid to convince him to join Leverkusen this summer.
𝓀Liverpool are ready to sell the Dutchman, but are demanding an initial fee of £20 million plus another £5 million in potential add-ons.
🃏That, at the time of writing, is too expensive for Leverkusen.
Plettenberg tweeted: “In the past few days, there was a phone call between Xabi Alonso𒆙 and Sepp van den Berg. Personal terms with SvdB are not an issue.
ꦰ“Concrete negotiations with LFC have taken place as revealed yesterday. Liverpool willing to agree: £20m + £5m add-ons. At this stage too expensive for Leverkusen and Bayer 04 only considering to sign the 22 y/o in the event that another defender leaves the club until Deadline Day.
🐻“Stuttgart was also pushing for him until Tuesday. He was their plan A. Now out of the race. BrentfordFC, 100 per cent there and willing to pay £20m+£5m and now waiting for the player‘s decision.”
Liverpool could be about to take a huge risk
🤡It is really baffling that Liverpool have not signed a single player in this summer’s transfer window.
🏅Everybody expected Slot to be given the freedom to sign a few new names, but for one reason or another, nobody has come in.
Now, the Merseysiders have started the season with just four centre-halves – Virgil van Dijk, Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konate and Van den Berg. Joe Gomez will be allowed to leave Liverpool.
💜If both Van den Berg and Gomez are sold, the Reds will have just three central defenders left. Ending the transfer window with so few options would be an absolute disaster.
♉Unless they can sign a replacement, we think selling Van den Berg would be a very risky move.
