‘Writing is on the wall’… John Hartson says £16k p/w Celtic player’s career will be over in January
John Hartson thinks that 24-year-old Celtic midfielder, David Turnbull, could be on his way out of Celtic in January.
The former Celtic hero was speaking about Turnbull after he was subbed in the 3-1 win over St Johnstone at the weekend.
Turnbull, who is on £16k per week at Celtic looks like he could be on his way as Hartson believes that his constant yo-yo-ing in and out of the team is not a good sign.
Hartson said [], “Sometimes the writing can be on the wall. I liked David Turnbull, we were talking about him off-air and midfield players who can come back with double figures are worth their weight in gold.
“And for me, he does that. But whether or not Brendan’s got different ideas in terms of bringing in another midfield player or there’s players he’s got at the football club.
“I like the lad but it looks like the writing is on the wall. I don’t believe Celtic have offered him a new contract or maybe they have and he’s turned it down. I don’t know.
“But he’s in and out of the team. He’s out for a week and then he comes back in. So my immediate thoughts, I think he’s one of the players that they’d look to sell.”
Turnbull has been a good servant to Celtic this season in terms of goals but, as many pundits and former Celtic players have pointed out, he needs to do more to stay in Brendan Rodgers’ side.

In fact, the Celtic manager himself suggested that Turnbull is not fit enough to play in the Champions League.
When you think that Rodgers is determined to make a mark on the competition next season, I can’t see the Celtic manager allowing a player who can’t keep up with the pace of European football to hand around the club for too long.
Like Hartson, I also believe that Turnbull needs to leave Celtic. Because if he has ambitions of playing for Scotland again he needs regular football and he’s simply not going to get that under Rodgers.
