‘Wow’: Mark Lawrenson believes Manchester City have the ‘best player in the world right now’

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has been praised by BBC Sport pundit Mark Lawrenson, who believes he’s arguably the “best player in the world right now”.

The 29-year-old has been with the Citizens since 2015, when he joined from Wolfsburg for a then club record £55million.

Since then, he has developed into one of the best players in world football, winning 11 trophies at the Etihad Stadium including three Premier League titles.

De Bruyne, who recently penned a new contract until 2025, has made 260 competitive appearances for City, netting 66 goals and registering 106 assists.

For Belgium, meanwhile, he has won 80 caps, scoring 21 goals, and helped the Red Devils finish third in the 2018 World Cup.

Lawrenson waxed lyrical about De Bruyne in a article featuring 25 pundits discussing their top Premier League players of the season.

While many pundits opted for City’s Ruben Dias, the eventual winner of the PFA Player of the Year award, the former Liverpool man went for De Bruyne.

“Dias has been good, very good – but De Bruyne has been like ‘wow’,” he said. “At 29, he is arguably the best player in the world right now.

“City have a great team but De Bruyne can do it on his own if he has to. When he gets the ball, you know he will make things happen – and he does it every time.”

De Bruyne is without a doubt one of the best players in the world – “exceptional”, in Pep Guardiola’s – and has been sensational for club and country over the years.

He’s already won his third Premier League title and could potentially lift the Champions League on 29 May.

And with Euro 2020 coming up in a few weeks, De Bruyne is in with a chance of earning international glory too.
