Reported Liverpool target Jadon Sancho has been praised by Germany legend Lothar Matthaus, who was left stunned the first time he saw him in action.

The claimed in February that the Anfield side had informed Borussia Dortmund of their desire to sign the England international later this year.

Numerous other elite clubs have also been linked with Sancho, including Manchester United, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea ().

Prior to the Bundesliga restart, the 20-year-old had weighed in with 17 goals and 19 assists from 35 games in all competitions this season, Dortmund fighting for the title.

Overall, Sancho has a simply remarkable 31 goals and 42 assists from just 90 first-team games in the black and yellow.

German legend Matthaus first spotted the Englishman’s ability while watching an Under-17 European Championship match between England and Norway.

He told : “I was watching in the gym and I stopped the training session to call a friend of mine who works in sport to ask, “Who is the English guy on the left wing?”

‘My friend told me, “His name is Sancho and he plays for Manchester City.” I thought, “Wow! He is a great player and he will have a great career.”

“Then, he signed for Dortmund six months later and I was like, “How could Pep Guardiola let this great player go?”

“I didn’t understand it at the time, as I knew Guardiola had a good eye for young talent. And Sancho had speed, made assists, scored goals and was always running. Sure, he wasn’t working defensively back then but he didn’t need to; a young player is never perfect.

“But I saw the talent in him, so I was happy he went to Dortmund. It has helped him develop. Maybe he will go back to England but I know Dortmund will ask for a lot of money for this diamond.”

Liverpool are one of the strongest clubs in world football and Sancho is one of the best young footballers out there, so it’s no surprise to see the two linked – the 20-year-old would make the Reds’ already fearsome attacking ranks even more frightening.

A recent report from claims Sancho has an agreement with Dortmund to move clubs this summer, and given Liverpool are probably the most attractive proposition for a player in terms of English clubs really it’s just a question of whether the Reds have the funds to purchase him.
