‘Would’ve been able to fix it’: Some Spurs fans want £11.5m man back in starting XI
A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have urged Jose Mourinho to stop benching Toby Alderweireld in wake of Spurs’ Premier League defeat on Thursday evening.
Since the resumption of English football, Mourinho has opted for Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez as his centre-back partnership.
Against Manchester United, Spurs conceded once, Dier giving away a penalty, while the rearguard kept a clean sheet in the following game, against West Ham.

However, the Tottenham back line was exposed at Sheffield United as the hosts netted three, with only Harry Kane’s 90th-minute consolation making the scoreline mildly more respectable.
Both Sanchez and Dier were caught out on numerous occasions, while Serge Aurier’s efforts up the flank were ineffective and also left the back exposed.
Such a dismal showing in defence must require Mourinho to act quickly, and quite a few Tottenham fans reckon bringing back the Belgian veteran is key.
As well as potentially reclaiming his spot in central defence, Alderweireld can also feature at right-back, with Mourinho he could be deployed there in “emergency situations”.
Here is what some Spurs fans have been saying on social media about the £ man:
Alderweireld needs to be playing every game, our defence is an embarrassment without him.

it’s centre backs, stats aren’t the story here. Dunno why Alderweireld hasn’t played recently though.

Just so weird because Alderweireld has been benched for no real reason, Dier was never better than him at any point and has somehow uprooted him from the squad.

Unfortunately both are well past their peak now (and are both unbelievably slow ?), Vertonghen particularly. Though after the shambles of today I don’t see why Alderweireld shouldn’t get more game time going forward

Finally tying Alderweireld down to a (presumably massive) contract only to sideline him in favor of that most fearsome of duos Dier and Sanchez is… an interesting choice.

I picked Alderweireld in all 3 of my predicted teams so far since the restart because you may get away with 1 or 2 games with them together but it will get you eventually. It did tonight. You need an experienced head in there next to one of them.

This is 100% correct. Can’t understand why alderweireld doesn’t get a game?

Serge, Davinson, Sissoko, and Dier all got beaten on the second. Toby would’ve been able to fix it at multiple points.
