Would Steven Gerrard play Ben Woodburn centrally if he signed for Rangers?

Rangers are reportedly interested in the signature of Liverpool’s young Welsh talent Ben Woodburn. The Scottish Sun has reported that the playmaker is on the radar of Steven Gerrard, who knows him well from his time coaching at his former club.

Woodburn has just had a loan spell at Sheffield United cut short after failing to have a big impact at Bramall Lane.

Woodburn is, however, an impressive talent and Rangers would be right to bring in such a player in January.

One big question would be where Rangers plan on playing him. Woodburn has not yet found his niche on the football pitch. In his relatively short career, he has played in a number of different positions.

The teenager has played as a winger more often than not or even as a second striker.

However, Gerrard is perhaps looking at playing him in a more central role.

“I thought he was excellent as an eight, controlling the middle of the pitch for the majority of the game.”

He has played Woodburn as an attacking central midfielder in the past and it could be he is seen as a good alternative to Scott Arfield in that area of the pitch at Ibrox.

With Rangers looking good in the wide areas, with Ryan Kent, Glenn Middleton, Eros Grezda and Daniel Candeias all present, it might be this is where Gerrard has his eyes on putting the Welshman.

If so, it would see Woodburn playing in arguably his best position.
