Would signing Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos propel Manchester United into the title race?
The claim that Manchester United could be preparing to revive their interest in Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos only a few years after the Germany international turned down the opportunity to move to Old Trafford as he instead favoured a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu.
The 28-year-old has become a key fixture in the Madrid side and has enjoyed the increased freedom afforded to him since the arrival of Zinedine Zidane in the role of manager. His passing and vision is second to none and is rated as some of the best in the game, with it coming as no surprise that he has made 12 assists in 30 appearances to date this season.
Such distribution, with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in front of him, is enough to whet the appetite of United fans, and would certainly provide them with a massive boost as they seek to push back into the top four. This season, their lack of quality in midfield has cost them, with an ageing Michael Carrick and a substandard Marouane Fellaini lacking the dynamism or creativity to capitalise on the quality of the strikers in the squad.
Potentially the perfect partner for Paul Pogba, it could well be worth a big investment by the Red Devils, which would undoubtedly be required if they were to make a move for the man who won the World Cup in 2014.
However, a move seems hugely unlikely. The German seems to be happy in Madrid, where he is one of his side’s most important players, and the club would certainly be in no rush to sell. Club president Florentino Perez is already known to have a frictious relationship with United after the David De Gea debacle in 2014, and he certainly wouldn’t be keen on boosting his former managers chances of success in Europe by selling Kroos.
Ambitious, yes, but realistic, no. United fans may be pleased to see that the club are setting their sights high, but they have shown this season that a signing of this magnitude is required if they are to return as realistic title contenders for the Premier League next season.
