Would signing Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang make up for Chelsea’s terrible transfer window to date?
It has been a fairly miserable start to the summer transfer window for last season’s Premier League champions Chelsea, having missed out on Romelu Lukaku to rivals Manchester United while also facing an uphill challenge to sign Juventus left-back Alex Sandro. The Brazilian is reportedly having doubts about leaving Italy, according to Sky Journalist Kaveh Solhekol, as referenced by the and , and may not sign for the Stamford Bridge outfit.
The Blues have done little to please fans with the underwhelming signing of Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero as well and it’s clear the London club need to get their act together. The shambles that was missing out on former player Lukaku has left a sour taste in the mouths of Chelsea supporters, but that could easily change if they signed Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
According to , the London club have been offered the chance to sign the striker for £70 million. However, they will have to fight off other top European clubs that are also interested in the player, with AC Milan and PSG attracted by the Gabon man’s obvious talents.
Aubameyang is renowned for his goal-scoring, having had numerous stellar seasons in Germany. It would truly be a marquee signing, should Chelsea bring in the Dortmund hitman and he would solve the Blues’ issues up top, with Diego Costa having being exiled from the first-team by manager Antonio Conte.
In Conte’s first attempt at the Premier League, his Chelsea side made light work of winning the competition, finishing seven points clear of second-place Tottenham. However, the club need to replace the missing Costa quickly if they are to improve upon last season’s successes.
Aubameyang scored 42 goals for club and country last season and he looked mightily impressive in a Thomas Tuchel side that didn’t have the greatest of campaigns.
The Gabon international finished the season with Germany’s golden boot, ahead of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, and adding him to a Chelsea side, who were prolific last campaign, has potential to result in the 28-year-old furthering his goal scoring exploits.
The Dortmund frontman is the perfect player for Conte’s side as he possesses such fine speed and acceleration. The Blues, who utilised the counter attack perfectly on occasions last term, will be even more rapid going forward with Aubameyang in their side, which will frighten opposition.
For £70 million, he may be expensive, but the 28-year-old would add extraordinary pace to Chelsea’s front-line, giving them a different dimension going forward. Eventually, if Aubameyang was able to continue his fine form in the Premier Leagye, the pain of missing out on Lukaku – and potentially others – would be forgotten.
