‘Would excite everybody’: Former Celtic star cites Rangers factor as he backs Keane
It’s fair to say that Roy Keane would be a controversial appointment at Celtic.
Chris Sutton recently suggested that there may be better candidates out there, and the likes of Enzo Maresca, Eddie Howe and Rafael Benitez are among those who have been mentioned in connection with the vacancy.
Another former Parkhead star, however, believes it would be an exciting appointment.
Simon Donnelly, who made 195 appearances for the club before joining Sheffield Wednesday in 1999, says the prospect of a battle against Steven Gerrard would generate significant interest.
Rangers wrapped up the Premiership title earlier this month, and currently hold a 20-point lead over their rivals with five games remaining.
In an interview on , the prospect of Nicky Butt teaming up with former Manchester United colleague Keane as a Celtic management team was raised, and Donnelly was asked who he feels would be the best fit.
He responded: “Roy Keane for me excites me. I think people have their doubts about Roy Keane, but I think he’s a winner.
“And I think, coming into Celtic to go head-to-head with Steven Gerrard would be something that would excite everybody.
“So that’s an interesting one. Nicky Butt coming in alongside him.
“I’d be happy with that.”
Keane made 13 appearances for Celtic after joining in December 2005.
