Would Dortmund’s Matthias Ginter be the right replacement for Kyle Walker at Tottenham?

The have claimed over the past day that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino could be set to make a move for Borussia Dortmund defender Matthias Ginter this summer window.

It is believed that the North London side are prepared to enter a battle with Bundesliga side Hoffenheim to secure the signing of the 23-year-old German in a deal worth a reported £15million.

With the also reporting that defender Kyle Walker is looking at an impending exit to Manchester City over the next few months, it looks like the Argentine boss could be set to act quickly.

What could Ginter bring to the Premier League?

For a side that narrowly missed out on the Premier League title last season to rivals Chelsea, this summer provides a crucial period where Tottenham need to bring in players that will add something.

Should Walker in fact leave White Hart Lane it would leave a gaping hole on the right-side of the Tottenham defence – after all, he was named in the PFA team of the year – and Ginter could fill this suitably.

Since arriving at Dortmund from fellow German side Freiburg, Ginter has grown into an extremely promising young defender and is being touted to become one of Germany’s best in upcoming years.

His versatility at being able to play either centrally, as part of a defensive three or as a wider full-back would appeal to Pochettino, and it could take little work to get him equipped to his system at Spurs.

Already a World Cup winner with Germany at the 23-years-old, the youngster is an attack-minded defender who possesses incredibly quick ability both with his on-field decision-making and his feet.

His history as an attacking midfielder through the Freiburg youth system means that he’s not just a typical, solid defender; instead he’s more than comfortable to drive out of defence into the midfield.

The German defender has an unnerving ability to read the game too, able to step out of his defensive line confidently and stop the opposition attackers getting the ball played in to their feet.

After playing alongside Mats Hummels for two years in Germany Ginter’s had the right man beside him to guide his early development – one huge reason as to how he’s cracked the German national side.

In a summer where Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk has been given a £60 million price tag, as reported by , Ginter would represent the opportunity to get a promising player for just a quarter of that.
