‘Would be great for Celtic’: Pat Nevin tips ‘absolutely unbelievable’ coach for Parkhead reins
Celtic have been urged by Scotland icon Pat Nevin to look into bringing Steve Clarke to Parkhead as a replacement for Neil Lennon.
The Hoops are on the lookout for a new manager after Lennon resigned on Wednesday, with the club 18 points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers.
Lennon’s assistant John Kennedy has taken interim charge of the Bhoys, who will look to get back to winning ways on Sunday after losing 1-0 to Ross County last week.
Several coaches have been linked with the Celtic job, including Frank Lampard and Eddie Howe, both currently free agents.
Clarke, who steered Scotland to this summer’s rescheduled European Championships, is another name tipped for the Celtic reins.
And Nevin, who twice attempted to lure Clarke to Scotland earlier in his career, thinks he’d be a great shout, even though his current national manager’s position could count against him.
“I can’t speak for Steve as to what he would do – but I can testify to his ability as a coach,” he told the .
“I twice tried to sign him as manager. The first time when I was at Motherwell I wanted to bring him to Scotland and then again when I was a middle man helping Hibs find a manager.
“A few years later he did come up to Scotland – and it’s fair to say he’s not done badly.
“I was on the radio with him recently and he was asked if getting Scotland to a major championship was his greatest achievement. I said, hang on, the job he did at Kilmarnock was absolutely unbelievable.
“Scotland has been a continuation of that, where he’s done a remarkable job with the tools at his disposal.
“Steve’s technically very good. You don’t work with the people he has by fluke. Managers like Kenny and Jose relied on him and they loved his knowledge along with the fact he’s a typical, no nonsense, dour Scot.
“It’s no surprise he’s mentioned in connection with Celtic again – he absolutely has the credentials. It would be great for Celtic and sore for Scotland.”

Clarke is a top manager who did superbly at Kilmarnock and has successfully got Scotland to their first major tournament in over 20 years, so it’s not surprising to see him linked with the Celtic job.
That said, given he’ll have a busy summer with the national team and Celtic have a lot of work to do before the new season starts, it’s more likely that the Hoops will opt for someone who can take the reins as soon as possible, certainly by the close season.
