Would a move for Roma’s Mohamed Salah be the best use of Liverpool’s transfer funds?
According to reports over the past two days, Liverpool have allegedly upped their interest significantly in Roma midfielder Mohamed Salah ahead of a potential switch to Anfield this summer.
have claimed that the Italian side have now rejected a £28 million bid (as the English-based divulge) for the Egyptian winger but, as of today, the two clubs remain in talks, with Jurgen Klopp keen on his man.
The 24-year-old previously played in the Premier League for Chelsea during an underwhelming spell three years ago, before moving to Italy, but Klopp has reportedly outlined Salah as one of his targets.
What could Salah bring to Anfield?
Salah has always possessed the speed and turn of pace needed to cause defences problems and he’s really developed this into a potent threat during his respective spells at Fiorentina and Roma in Italy.
Lightning quick on the counter – something which would suit Klopp’s Liverpool perfectly – his passing in the final third has improved massively and there’s an added sense of vision to his play now
His versatility in the final third would also work well at Anfield, able to swap between the flanks to try and get some joy out of the full-backs as well as roam around in space between midfield lines.
The Egyptian talisman has created more chances (134) than anybody else at Roma since joining the side and, with 15 goals and 11 assists this season, he has worked on his end product well in Serie A.
Yet the worry for Liverpool is that, despite spending two years at Chelsea during his early development, he struggled to impress and, as a result, spent most of his time in London watching from the bench.
The physicality of the Premier League and the competition for first-team slots proved to be a struggle for a younger Salah, and there’s no guaranteeing that he wouldn’t revert back to this once again.
Two years down the line, bringing Salah back to the English top-flight certainly wouldn’t come without an element of risk for Liverpool – but with his late form for Roma it could be one worth taking.
Do Liverpool really need the Egyptian?
However, the point can be raised of do Liverpool really need another midfielder?
With Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino already in their ranks there’s no obvious place for Salah to slot into the first-team – which seems like a waste of £30 million.
Although there’s no doubt that the 24-year-old could add some serious strength in depth to Klopp’s side, the argument can be raised that there are more pressing areas that Liverpool could be using their transfer budget on instead of adding another man to their already esteemed list of midfielders.
A goalkeeper, a left-back, a centre-back and an out-and-out striker are all positions that come to mind way ahead of another attacking midfielder, and it seems that Klopp has muddled his priorities.
claims that Salah has expressed his desire to return to England and set the record straight, and with Liverpool looking to challenge for the title he would provide solid squad depth.
With these reports suggesting that Liverpool have already had a formal bid rejected for the midfielder, it now appears only a matter of time before the two clubs come to an agreement over a move.
