World Cup winner says he nearly signed for Man Utd instead of Arsenal

Manchester United have a history of pinching players from Arsenal.

Cristiano Ronaldo famously signed for the Red Devils instead of the Gunners way back in 2004, while Robin van Persie crossed this divide back in 2012.

United have been a real thorn in Arsenal’s side over the years, but now, we’ve finally heard a story where Arsenal got the better of United in the race for a talented player.

Indeed, speaking on the , Cesc Fabregas has been speaking about his initial move to England, and he says that he almost joined United before signing for the Gunners.

Cesc Fabregas almost signed for Man United

The Spanish World Cup winner spoke about how he almost headed to Old Trafford.

“I think there were some conversations with my parents, but Arsenal were the ones who went full-on. I think Pique after went to United, but they were more interested in him than me. At this stage I think they were talking to three or four players at the academy at Barcelona, but it was always Arsenal for me,” Fabregas said.

Imagine Cesc Fabregas at Man United

Could you imagine if Fabregas had joined United instead of Arsenal?

The Spaniard was genuinely one of the very best midfielders in the Premier League from the age of 18, and if he’d joined United, the Red Devils’ domination would’ve been even more frightening.

Fabregas and Paul Scholes would’ve made one of the best midfield pairings in Premier League history, and it would’ve been an absolute joy to watch.

That being said, as Fabregas said, United did get their hands on one Spanish star around this time in the shape of Gerard Pique, but Pique didn’t have the best of times in Manchester, so perhaps Fabregas wouldn’t have been able to fulfil his potential if he went to Old Trafford instead of Highbury at the time.
