‘World class’: Ange Postecoglou hails 25-year-old Tottenham player despite Chelsea defeat last night

In the fallout of a monumental game against Chelsea, Ange Postecoglou has now been defending Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero.

Postecoglou was talking to after the game and did admit that he thought Romero deserved his red card.

However, the manager also reminded fans that physicality is a key part of Romero’s game at Tottenham.

Postecoglou called his defender ‘world class’ and seemingly wasn’t prepared to criticise him in public.

: “It’s hard to say. Romero is a world class defender and part of his game has been having that physicality.

“It’s one of those where he has won the ball and his follow through.

“I haven’t had a good look at it, but it’s a red card and I thought we were in a position where we could control the game, it wasn’t out of our hands at that point, but it just felt like we couldn’t get any rhythm because there was endless waiting for decisions to get clarified.”

And whilst Postecoglou is still giving Romero his backing, the defenders’ indiscretions are now costing Tottenham.

It did seem that Romero had put these kinds of moments behind him this season, but the red card will act as a reminder of how he needs to improve.

Tottenham will now have the difficult task of constructing an almost entirely new back line for their visit to Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend.

Romero, Destiny Udogie and Micky van de Ven are all likely to be missing – with the latter looking in a lot of pain as he came off.

Therefore, fans may expect Postecoglou to hand a full debut to youngster Ashley Phillips.

Postecoglou has heavily praised his new signing since arriving, and he may now be needed with options thin on the ground.

Tottenham will now have to cope without Romero for the next three games, and Postecoglou will have to lean on his squad.

Eric Dier will be a pivotal name once again, proving why it may not be a good idea for a January departure.

Spurs haven’t been too unlucky with absences so far this season, but something of a landslide has all come at once.
