‘Won’t be overawed’: Former Tottenham team-mate gives Ryan Mason verdict

Ryan Mason may have just become the youngest boss in Premier League history, but one former team-mate believes the 29-year-old won’t be overawed.

Tottenham announced the sacking of Jose Mourinho and backroom staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra on Monday morning, and have moved quickly to install an interim manager.

Mason’s role was announced on Tuesday morning, and he has a busy few days ahead with Wednesday night’s Premier League match against Southampton followed by Sunday’s Carabao Cup Final against Manchester City.

Darren Bent played alongside Mason at Tottenham when the new boss was a youngster, and insists he will be able to handle the challenge of managing big names.

Speaking on , Bent said: “I know he’s not quite ready and he probably wouldn’t want it, but Ryan Mason will do a good job.

“I know Ryan really well. He’s motivated, he’s driven.

“Every time he’s gone to a meeting with managers, talking about what he wants to do in the future, they’ve been impressed by him.

“And also as well he won’t be overawed by the way, in terms of some of the characters in that dressing room, like the Harry Kanes.

“They know him. He’s an international, he’s played for England, so there’s no reason why he can’t go in there and command the respect of the dressing room and do a good job.

“I wouldn’t rule that one out either.”

Mason retired from the game at the age of 26 due to the risks of playing after fracturing his skull.

He faces a tough task in terms of reaching the top four, with Spurs currently in seventh place.
