‘Wonderful kid’: Manager hails Leeds-linked 20-year-old ‘natural goalscorer’, netted twice today
Liverpool forward and reported Leeds United loan target Rhian Brewster has been praised by Jurgen Klopp following his two-goal display in pre-season today.
According to a report in from last week, Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa is keen to add Brewster to the Elland Road ranks ahead of their first season back in the Premier League.
Brewster is one of the most highly rated players who have come through the Reds academy in recent years, and was thoroughly impressive on loan at Swansea City last season with .
In 20 regular-season appearances, the 20-year-old weighed in with 10 goals, helping the Swans sneak into the playoffs ahead of Nottingham Forest on the last day of the campaign.
Brewster also netted in their semi-final second leg against Brentford to give his loan side a fighting chance, though in the end the Bees held on for a 3-2 aggregate win.
On Tuesday, Liverpool took on Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and, when Brewster came off the bench just after the hour mark, the Reds were two down after Patson Daka’s first-half double.
However, Brewster – who also scored against Stuttgart – netted in the 72nd minute, rifling into the roof of the net after good link-up play by James Milner and Takumi Minamino.
He then got his second with nine minutes to go, a chip from outside the area into the empty goal after the goalkeeper had been drawn out by Curtis Jones.
“Rhian is a young boy and he knows that,” Klopp told the Liverpool at full time. “He can learn a lot of things but he’s a natural goalscorer – that’s what he is.
“He has to be more involved in the game when he’s on the pitch, but I have to say in the decisive moments he’s 100 per cent there.
“I like that a lot and he’s a wonderful kid, so that’s all good. If you score three goals in two games, it’s not a bad number and that’s OK.”
TBR View:
Brewster would probably be a shoe-in for most Premier League sides’ first teams next season after the progress he’s made in the last few years, particularly last term.
However, when you have the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane ahead of you, then it’s a tough ask to say the least.
That said, Brewster is doing his chances of breaking into the Liverpool first team no harm at all with some fine performances in pre-season.
Though claimed that Brewster is set for another loan season away from Anfield, there’s a good chance that Klopp could reconsider if the player continues to hammer in the goals.
