One to Watch: Wolves’ Ruben Vinagre justifying decision to sell Barry Douglas to Leeds
Ruben Vinagre at left wing-back on his own is quite a lot of sauce. Vinagre at left wing-back with Adama Traore in front of him on the left-wing is maximum sauce.
In Wolves’ 2-0 win in the EFL Cup against Sheffield Wednesday, the pair ran riot as Wolves swept to a comfortable victory. They combined for an extraordinary 16 attempt dribbles – five of those from Vinagre, who completed three.
Ultimately, it is simply an obscene amount of firepower to be possessed by a team that are newly promoted to the Premier League. Alongside the many other options in Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad, it’s clear that the controversial sale of Barry Douglas to Leeds United earlier this summer was a logical move to make.
“What I would like to say is to thank all the players that were involved on the last season, their help, the way they help us will are thankful forever to them but life goes on. I wish Barry Douglas all the best in Leeds.”
Vinagre however, refuses to simply abdicate his defensive duties. He really is quite proactive, and in this game won possession of the ball nine times – no player on either side won it more. Most of those balls were won in his defensive third too, winning the ball five times in that zone. All this from a player still second-choice at left wing-back for Wolves.
Not only do they have a scary amount of firepower, but they are also obscenely deep for a newly promoted team. Vinagre should be close to this starting XI though. He can play a range of positions wide and can even play a role in midfield if necessary.
His main issue continues to be his lack of care in possession – one of the major immaturities in his game that he simply cannot afford at Premier League level. This is England though, it is a long season and the 19-year-old will undoubtedly have more chances to impress.
