Wolves must rekindle interest in £36m Goncalo Guedes amid Valencia clear-out – TBR View

There is major upheaval at Spanish side Valencia this summer, with the entire first-team squad reportedly available for transfer. 

that includes Portuguese international Goncalo Guedes. 

The one-time ‘next Cristiano Ronaldo’ who scored the winning goal for Portugal in last summer’s UEFA Nations League final is seemingly up for grabs and that might just arouse the attention of Wolverhampton Wanderers. Or, at least it should. 

Wolves were heavily linked with a move for the player in the summer of 2018.

that Wolves were keen on bringing the player in from Paris Saint-Germain, following a loan spell at the Mestalla. The report claimed that PSG wanted €60 million (£53m) for his services, but that Wolves had a potential edge due to their relationship with Jorge Mendes, Guedes’ agent. 

Wolves’ interest amounted to nothing. Guedes did eventually return to Valencia, the the La Liga side got their man for the £36 million they initially hoped to.

Wolves moved on, bringing in Raul Jimenez and Adama Traore that summer, two deals which have proved immensely successful. 

But with doubts over the duo’s long-term futures, a chance to bring in Guedes, who can operate both out wide or through the middle might be too tempting to pass up. 

The 23-year-old has not yet lived up to those Ronaldo comparisons and he provided just two goals and two assists for Los Che last season in an injury struck campaign.

But he remains an immensely talented individual who, with the right coaching, could be a dual-threat attacker. 

Wolves’ relationship with Jorge Mendes has seen them snap up the likes of Jimenez, Joao Moutinho, and Ruben Neves among others. 

Guedes’ valuation has likely dropped massively since 2018 and this might be the perfect chance to get him on the cheap. 

If they could then nurture him back onto that Ronaldo career-path, then it would prove a priceless piece of business.
