Wilson Odobert’s performance for France U-21s leaves Tottenham fans with the same concerns

France Under-21s reached the semi-finals of the European Championships, although it was a tough evening for Wilson Odobert, who struggled against the young Danish side.

Wilson Odobert’s performance against Denmark Under-21 has left Tottenham Hotspur supporters with concerns over his current impact for club and country.

Odobert impressed against Uzbekistan in a friendly in the build-up to the tournament, however, his impact has so far been limited.

The 20-year-old is coming off a tricky debut campaign in North London, where he suffered a bad hamstring injury and has since found it tough trying to break into the team.

The Spurs winger hasn’t been a prominent player for the young French squad in Slovakia, although his performances have been somewhat questionable.

Tottenham fans want Wilson Odobert to be more decisive

Tottenham fans have called for Odobert to be more decisive in his play, with the winger often shying away from the big moments.

The 20-year-old had just two efforts at goal and created one big chance against Denmark on an evening where it felt like he could have a much bigger impact.

Meanwhile, his Spurs teammate Mathys Tel was quite the opposite, as after six attempts at goal, the former Bayern Munich star finally found the back of the net to score the winner.

The winger’s performances were criticised last season for Spurs as well, with Micah Richards questioning Odobert’s confidence.

Confidence looks to be an issue for the youngster right now, and Thomas Frank will need to work with him to help him improve in this aspect.

After France Under-21’s 3-2 win over Denmark, Spurs supporters took to X to share their thoughts on Odobert’s display.

One fan said: “The game kinda sums up the difference between Tel and Odobert for me, it’s really hard to be a top winger if you’re not assertive in every action.”

Another added: “The difference is mental. Tel is hungry to score with every opportunity Odobert settles for it laying it off to other players.”

There were calls for the 20-year-old to be sent out on loan: “Odobert needs to go out on loan. I was excited about him initially as he looked very skilful, but since his injuries, he looked so poor.”

Finally, another added: “Odobert turned 20 in November and you can tell he’s naturally introverted just by the way he carries himself, so hopefully the personality/courage thing will come with maturity and self-assurance gained from output/playing time.”

Wilson Odobert could be big winner from Thomas Frank’s arrival

Odobert might actually benefit from playing in a new role under Frank, which could see him move back into the number ten role.

One strong aspect of his game is his versatility as he can feature on either flank, as a centre-forward or just behind the striker.

The former Burnley player should be one of the main beneficiaries of the Danish head coach’s appointment.

Frank has proven himself to be a top coach in terms of profiling players and identifying where they would be best suited in the team.

The 51-year-old did a stellar job at Brentford, improving the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins and Yoane Wissa.

Now, Odobert could be his latest attacking project with the winger still being very raw, but also a player who clearly has a great deal of potential.

Mathys Tel’s performance for France U-21 earns big praise

Tel was praised by Jermain Defoe for his goal, and the Spurs legend even suggested his finish was ‘Thierry Henry-like’.

Defoe was so impressed with the youngster’s persistence to keep going and not shy away, despite having missed several chances before his goal.

Defoe told Channel 4: “As soon as he gets it here, you always fancy him one-versus-one – that’s what he does well. That’s Thierry Henry-like. He uses the defender and just curls it, a really controlled finish. It’s well executed and the keeper has no chance

“He deserved that, to be honest, because he looked bright and sharp all game, he missed a couple of chances in the first half, but key moments in games that make the difference.
