Why Wagner’s Huddersfield should not be written off yet
At the start of the 2018-19 Premier League season, David Wagner’s Huddersfield Town side were widely regarded as one of three teams set for relegation.
The Terriers narrowly avoided the drop last time round, playing with one of the league’s smallest budgets after they earned promotion from the Championship via the play-offs.
Despite lacking the attacking prowess of the top Premier League teams, Wagner’s Huddersfield play with heart that is hard to match, and the German-born manager will remain a level-headed character throughout the season no matter what hurdles come their way.
New boys Wolverhampton Wanderers fell short of the quality needed to break down a resilient Terriers side at the Molineux last weekend, and that win took Huddersfield out of the relegation zone and above Burnley, who qualified for the Europa League last season.
Huddersfield’s character is a testament to that of their manager.
Wagner has instilled a determination to play quality football in spite of their shortcomings, and his belief in his squad’s ability could well pay dividends come the end of the season.
With only ten points on the board having played a third of the season, there’s definitely room for improvement.
However, as Wagner’s nine summer signings continue to settle at the John Smith’s Stadium and so long as his players continue to believe, there is a good chance Huddersfield will find at least three teams worse off than them come May.
