Why Romelu Lukaku’s form will be crucial to Manchester United this season
Big things are expected of Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku this season, having signed for an initial fee reported to be around .
The forward not only has the pressure of a huge price tag, but now he finds himself playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world, managed by one of the biggest managers, in Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils’ season will be largely down to the successes, or failures, of Lukaku, who will be hoping to continue the positive form he showed at former club Everton.
Since joining the Toffees in the 2013/14 season, he has been a consistent goal scorer, managing 70 goals in the Premier League in that time.
His most impressive season came last year, where the big Belgian scored a remarkable 25 goals in the league, bettered only by Tottenham striker Harry Kane.
His work at Everton has earned him a dream move to English giants Manchester United and it is time for Romelu Lukaku to deliver.
There were countless times last season where United found themselves dropping points at Old Trafford, and often to lesser Premier League sides.
The Red Devils were often victims of their own poor finishing, even with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic in their side. Mourinho’s squad were unable to put the ball in the back of the net, and that ultimately cost them.
The charismatic manager will be hoping that it will be different for Lukaku, who will be looking to be as successful as Ibrahimovic was. Creating chances for the big striker will be no issue, with the innovative talents such as Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata and Paul Pogba in the team, but the 24-year-old will be responsible for finishing them.
He has started well, with two debut goals against West Ham United, a sweet left foot strike and a header. Yet, he needs to maintain his form over the whole course of the campaign.
Of course, goals are the aspect he’ll be judged on, but for the first half an hour he looked quiet against the Hammers. A connection with his team needs to be built quickly, but, at such a tender stage of his United career, a brace will help him settle quickly.
The Belgian striker knows where the back of the net is, and if he continues as he started, he could be integral to his side’s successes this season.
