Why Manolo Gabbiadini’s Southampton loan exit is great business

On Wednesday, reported that Manolo Gabbiadini had agreed a loan deal with Sampdoria until the end of the season.

The exit of the misfiring striker is great business for Southampton, as the Saints offloaded a struggling goalscorer who did not feature in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans.

Gabbiadini enjoyed a dream start to his Southampton career after joining in 2017, bagging four goals in his first three league matches.

Yet things simply have not been the same for the Italian forward since. In his first full campaign with Southampton, Gabbiadini scored just five goals, and he has tallied just once in the first half of the 2018/19 season.

And since Hasenhuttl took charge in December, Gabbiadini has played just 15 minutes, all coming in the manager’s opening loss against Cardiff.

For the next five matches, the striker did not even make the matchday squad, missing out on vital wins over Arsenal and Huddersfield, as well as a draw against Chelsea.

Due to Manolo Gabbiadini’s lack of involvement under Hasenhuttl, combined with his abysmal scoring record, Southampton have secured a great piece of business by offloading the striker to Sampdoria for the rest of the season.
