Why Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips can emulate John Fleck

Leeds United’s season so far has gone pretty much to plan, with the Yorkshire club sat top of the Championship table with nine league games remaining and unfortunately a ban on football due to the coronavirus has everyone waiting.

But one of the main driving forces in their team this campaign has been Kalvin Phillips, who looks a Premier League player in the making.

The central midfielder is a product of the Whites academy and has played 175 senior games for them, but has really stepped up during the past couple of seasons.

Phillips has played 34 times this campaign across all competitions and is the general on the pitch for manager Marcelo Bielsa.

The 24-year-old is a deep-lying playmaker that dictates possession, but also puts out fires all over the pitch with his work-rate and defensive ability.

He is good enough to be called up to the senior England squad in the opinion of many and deserves a first opportunity in the top-flight sooner rather than later.

Sheffield United’s John Fleck is a player that hadn’t played in the Premier League before this season, but he’s made the step up with such ease and is a big reason why the Blades are surprisingly sat sixth in the table.

The 28-year-old is a box-to-box midfielder that always looked good enough to succeed in the top-flight and it’s no surprise to see him blossoming now.

There is no reason why Phillips can’t emulate his midfield counterpart and take the Premier League by storm at the first attempt.

The Leeds star has taken his game to a new level since Bielsa arrived at Elland Road and looks a class above in the Championship at times.
