Why Jonny Williams’ Charlton move is an appropriate next step after leaving Crystal Palace

After having spent his entire footballing career at Crystal Palace, Jonny Williams completed a permanent move away from SE25 to Charlton on Friday.

The transfer to the League One promotion contenders is an appropriate move for the 25-year-old, offering Williams a chance to kickstart his career with a fresh challenge in south London.

Charlton currently sit fifth in League One and are targeting a return to Championship football, led by ambitious manager Lee Bowyer.

Williams had become a forgotten man of sorts at Selhurst Park, with his last league start for the Eagles coming in 2013. A number of loans to Football League clubs followed, including a recent spell at Sunderland, yet the creative midfielder failed to find his top form.

A permanent switch to Charlton will undoubtedly offer Williams the stability and confidence he needs to thrive, as the Welshman can focus on his playing without worrying about his status at his parent club.

Still only 25 years of age, Williams has a long career ahead of him and can battle back from his previous injury woes at The Valley.

Although his deal at Charlton only runs until the end of the season, Jonny Williams can rediscover his best form at the League One club and mark a new chapter in his life after departing Crystal Palace.
