Why Conor Coady may have been snubbed by Gareth Southgate
for this month’s Euro 2020 qualifiers.
The Three Lions will take on the Czech Republic on Friday at Wembley, followed by Montenegro in Podgorica.
West Ham United starlet Declan Rice was the only new face to be called up by Southgate, with a host of in-form Englishmen missing out on this occasion.

James Ward-Prowse of Southampton missed out despite a recent purple patch, as did Crystal Palace youngster Aaron Wan Bissaka.
Another man who can perhaps count himself particularly unlucky is Conor Coady, who has been in fine fettle for high-flying Wolverhampton Wanderers.
A victim of system?
Coady has been terrific at the heart of Nuno Espirito Santo’s defence alongside Willy Boly and Ryan Bennett.
The former Liverpool prospect has really caught the eye with some commanding displays as captain of the side.
Perhaps one reason why Coady has been snubbed by Southgate is simply a case of the England playing a different system to Wolves.

Although Southgate has dabbled using three centre-halves, he has slowly come away from that system – instead reverting back to a more traditional back four with full-backs.
Southgate has not gone with three-at-the-back since the Switzerland friendly back in October – four games have passed since then.
Coady has been playing as part of a back three for the Black Country club for a while, but England have now veered away from the system they used so successfully at the World Cup, which is unfortunate for the defender.
Perhaps in Southgate’s mind, that simply rendered the ‘one-dimensional’ Coady a pointless selection.
