Why Chelsea think Robert Sanchez is making so many mistakes at the moment
Chelsea have had a bright start to the season under Enzo Maresca, but there are a few issues still boiling away under the surface at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea still have a bloated squad, and there’s an argument to make that the Blues still need a new striker.
Robert Sanchez has also been criticised in goal for Chelsea.
Robbie Savage recently claimed that Chelsea would never win the league with Sanchez, while Chelsea were also told that they should’ve signed David De Gea when he was available.
Sanchez is under fire at the moment, but the view within Chelsea is rather different.

How Chelsea view Robert Sanchez
Speaking on the London is Blue Podcast, Matt Law has been discussing how Chelsea view Sanchez.
According to the journalist, Chelsea are continuing to back Sanchez as a goalkeeper, and they believe his recent mistakes have been down to poor decision-making rather than a lack of talent.
“I made a check on Cole Palmer’s fitness and I decided to take a temperature check on Sanchez, and just make a few enquiries.
“Everything I got back was that they’re backing this guy and they feel positive about this guy. It was pointed out to me that while 26 looks old in this squad, 26 is young for a goalkeeper, and there’s a feeling that the mistakes he is making are more down to decision-making rather than talent.”
Robert Sanchez mistakes this season
Chelsea believe that Sanchez’s mistakes are down to decision-making, and it’s fair to say he’s making enough errors.
Robert Sanchez mistakes this season | Result |
Gave the ball away to Carlos Baleba for Brighton goal | Chelsea 4-2 Brighton |
Accused of being scared of the ball for Liverpool goal | Liverpool 2-1 Chelsea |
Gave away a penalty vs Liverpool which VAR overturned | Liverpool 2-1 Chelsea |
Gave away a penalty vs Manchester United | Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea |
Sanchez has made a handful of big mistakes already this season, and we’re only 10 games into the league campaign.
Chelsea aren’t ready give up on Sanchez yet, but once your confidence goes as a goalkeeper, you are in serious trouble, and we may be approaching that point.
That said, Sanchez has also made some brilliant saves this season, and if he can just improve in terms of consistency and cut out the poor decisions, he will ultimately prove to be good enough for Chelsea.
Chelsea still have full faith in Sanchez. Enzo Maresca was a big fan of the player before he was even hired, and, hopefully, that faith can be repaid soon.
