Why Arsenal still haven’t announced Mikel Merino signing

Arsenal could now be one step closer towards achieving the three player plan Mikel Arteta seemingly put in place at the start of the summer.

Whilst Arsenal will always stay alert to market opportunities, Arteta reportedly wanted to sign a left-sided defender as well as a new midfielder and forward.

In terms of those opportunities, an early summer bid for Benjamin Sesko has to fall into that category.

Arsenal weren’t necessarily thought to be looking for a striker, sources felt as if a winger to improve squad depth was more likely to arrive.

But either way, Arsenal made their move for Sesko, who eventually decided to stay in the Bundesliga for another year.

Instead, Arsenal are now linked with Raheem Sterling, a move that would be just as controversial as Kai Havertz arriving in north London.

That being said, Mikel Merino is evidently the midfielder who Arteta has chosen, and according to reports in Spain, his announcement could be very imminent.

Real Sociedad hoping that Arsenal announce Mikel Merino deal on Tuesday

According to local source , Real Sociedad are now hoping that Arsenal announce the signing of Merino as soon as possible.

The information was shared on Tuesday morning, saying that Arsenal and Sociedad only need to agree on a few more variables in the add-ons attached to the fee that will be paid for Merino.

Merino completed his Arsenal medical on Sunday, a deal that is really dragging on at this point.

Merino should be available for Brighton – which would almost be guaranteed if the timeline in this report is now followed.

Real Sociedad are keen to announce their deal for Mats Hummels, who left Borussia Dortmund this summer, and the club also want to find a new striker.

But in order to do so, the Spanish club need Merino’s transfer to be completed – the club want to immediately reinvest those funds.

Of course, the biggest question around north London right now is who will be the attacker Arsenal sign before the deadline.

Eddie Nketiah has all but left Arsenal, and the club will surely seek a replacement, especially given Fabio Vieira has also been allowed to head out on loan to FC Porto.
