Whiteman can prove his Tottenham credentials against ex-Spurs man McGee
Tottenham Hotspur’s under-21 side face Portsmouth in midweek and this is a great opportunity for some fringe players to stake first-team claims.
In the EFL Trophy, the Spurs youngsters get a taste of senior football when they play Portsmouth.
And one ex-Spurs man will be hoping to impress when he takes to the field with Pompey.
Luke McGee joined Portsmouth from Tottenham after finding first-team game time hard to come by.
In his first season on the south coast, he was the first-choice stopper, playing a total of 50 games for the League One side.
But McGee has struggled for game time this season, losing his place between the sticks to Craig MacGillivray.
Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett likes to rotate for the EFL Trophy, though, so McGee is likely to start in goal against his former club.
And while the 23-year-old will be keen to impress, this is a chance for his successor to prove his credentials.
Alfie Whiteman is highly rated by Tottenham and is considered to be the academy’s first-choice goalkeeper.
The 20-year-old has even made the bench on a few occasions for the first-team, although Hugo Lloris, Michel Vorm and Paulo Gazzaniga are all above him in the pecking order.
Whiteman faces his predecessor when McGee’s Pompey face Spurs tomorrow night and he can prove why he is the future of Spurs, as well as justifying Totenham’s decision to let McGee leave.
