While Gomez remains sidelined, Matip must play ahead of Lovren
Liverpool defender Joel Matip partnered Virgil van Dijk in defence for the second leg of the Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.
The Reds ran out 3-1 winners at the Allianz Arena () which means they’ll be in the draw for the competition’s quarter-final stages.
Matip did an excellent job in Germany alongside the imperious van Dijk, depsite the fact he scored an own goal to given the hosts hope in the tie.
Serge Gnabry’s dangerous cross meant that little could be done to prevent the equaliser – had Matip not touched it in, Robert Lewandowski certainly would have.
Matip was largely excellent for the visitors, and he simply must play ahead of Dejan Lovren for as a long as Joe Gomez remains sidelined.
Matip over Lovren
Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he expects Gomez to return to the first-team after the international break (), which is a major boost for the team.
Currently Matip has the shirt and he might hold onto it for a little while yet if Gomez needs to regain his match fitness.
Gomez should eventually be reintegrated by Klopp, but certainly while he’s out Matip must play alongside van Dijk and not Lovren.
The Croatian has had to feed off scraps this term after suffering from some niggling injuries, but his tendency to make errors should see him used as a last resort.
While the Cameroonian is nowhere near as comfortable or commanding as van Dijk, he is certainly more reliable than Lovren, who can look solid until an inevitable mistake.
