With the current season coming to its final full month of action in the Championship, Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner will surely look to be preparing for the new season.
As he only joined the club in November, Wagner has so far only had one transfer window to attempt to bring in players he feels, will make a big impact for the club. New signings this summer, are surely on the way, with the club already claiming the pursuit of fresh faces is already in progress.
But which players on loan or on short term deals at the club already, should Wagner look to offer contracts to starting next season?
Jamie Paterson (on loan from Nottingham Forest)
Despite Jamie Paterson’s undoubted ability, there is a potential problem in bringing him to the John Smith’s Stadium permanently.
Paterson was excluded very early on as Dougie Freedman became Nottingham Forest manager, despite being very well thought of by the Forest faithful, and the Scot’s recent sacking could mean a new manager may want to assess all his options. This means Paterson could still have a future at the City Ground.
Paterson needs to be aware though that pressure grows with every unsuccessful season at Forest, which could hinder his own individual progress. At Huddersfield, he will be given the time to flourish and maybe in a few seasons, will have improved enough, to move on to even bigger and better things.
Paterson, who signed under former Huddersfield manager Chris Powell, has become a real fan favourite at the Yorkshire club. With the ability to play behind the striker and across the midfield, ‘Pato’ has so far contributed with five goals during his loan spell. He has earned praise from fans for his direct approach going forward and he never seems to do the unnecessary, whilst still managing to get bums of seats, with everyone in the ground becoming more and more aware of his constant threat.
Karim Matmour
David Wagner claimed it was very unusual to sign a player of Matmour’s quality on a free transfer, which of course, was always likely to excite fans, despite many not being too familiar with Matmour’s career so far.
There has however been a mixed reaction since the Algerian international settled in at the club. He’s not a goal-scorer, and he may not get that many assists for you either, two qualities that most at Huddersfield were expecting and also believe is what is needed most in order to help take the pressure of top goal-scorer Nahki Wells.
In all fairness, they’re not wrong, and their point is valid, however, he does bring with him a lot of experience, not to mention a calm head, which is a huge asset that can go unnoticed from the stands. Not only that, but he is actually a very smart player. He makes clever runs enabling him to create space for others to exploit, and with that, he will surely also cause panic to defenders, as he turns them onto their blind side, and then find himself in dangerous positions.
Fans will definitely take to him, even more so now after his goal in the 4-1 humiliation of West Yorkshire rivals Leeds United. He won’t ever be a guaranteed starter for the club, but having him can only improve the squad as a whole.
Emyr Huws (on loan from Wigan Athletic)
Before signing for Town, it was rumoured that Huws had fallen out with Wigan manager Gary Caldwell. Even with Wigan possibly jumping straight back up to the Championship, it would be a big shock if Huws was ever to return to the club, at least whilst Caldwell is still there. Therefore, he will be available in the summer, and Wagner and the Huddersfield board would be silly not to look at the prospect on getting the former Manchester City man on a long-term contract.
Although his signing would not be critical, securing the services of Huws on a permanent basis would be a huge boost regardless. The Wales international is somewhat of a luxury player at the John Smith’s Stadium. Already, Huddersfield look as though they have a very capable and exciting midfield, with young prospects such as Phillip Billing and Kyle Dempsey having the experienced Jonathon Hogg and Dean Whitehead to guide them and aid their development.
So why bother signing Huws permanently? Because he is quite simply a very, very good player. He has shown he is capable of fulfilling all the roles required of an all-round midfielder. Defensively he very good. In any division, you need players that will win the ‘second ball’, which Huws more often than not is guaranteed to do. He is very capable in the air, and going forward, has shown excellent vision to really kick start dangerous attacks. He’s even got an eye for goal himself.
