The ‘most likely’ Andrew Robertson scenario as Liverpool linked with potential replacements
Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson has been a great servant for the Reds, making 323 appearances in all competitions.
However, the Liverpool full-back has been struggling this season, leading to criticism from pundits including Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright.
Neville said Robertson struggled against Arsenal, while Carragher admitted Robertson is “finding it tough” and Wright said he’s sad to see such a good player struggle.
Paul Merson has now predicted what Liverpool could do with Robertson in terms of his future at Anfield and potentially bringing in a replacement as early as this month.

Paul Merson thinks Liverpool will stick with Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas until end of season
Merson, writing on , believes Liverpool will look for a replacement for Robertson, but in the summer rather than in January.
The pundit believes Reds boss Arne Slot will simply alternate between Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas between now and the end of the season.
“Liverpool have had some issues at left-back with Andy Robertson struggling to find form,” Merson wrote.
“I don’t think they will bring in a new player to replace him in January though.
“They will most likely switch between Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas till the end of the season and then look for a replacement.”
Bournemouth star Milos Kerkez has been linked with a move to Liverpool as a potential successor to Robertson.
It has been reported that Kerkez would prefer a move to Liverpool over Manchester United were he to leave the Cherries.
Antonee Robinson has also been linked with Liverpool in recent times as Jamie Carragher wants Liverpool to sign a new player who can feature at centre-back and left-back.
How Robertson has fared this season compared to his best season
There’s no doubting that Robertson is struggling for form at present, without a single league goal or assist to his name this term.
When he’s firing on all cylinders, Robertson has shown he can be one of the best creators in the Premier League.
Take the 2019/20 campaign, for instance. He scored twice and assisted an impressive 12 goals to help the Reds win the Premier League title.
Robertson this season (2024/25) | Robertson’s best season (2019/20) | |
Games | 19 | 36 |
Goals | 0 | 2 |
Assists | 0 | 12 |
Crosses per game | 1.3 | 1.1 |
Tackles per game | 1.4 | 1.2 |
Interceptions per game | 0.5 | 0.8 |
Nevertheless, form can come and go. The likes of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah have been ‘written off’ in previous seasons due to lack of form, but they’ve come back strong.
At 30 years of age, Robertson is younger than both Van Dijk and Salah, and he still has a fair bit of time to return to form and prove all his critics wrong.
