‘What’s going on’, ‘he’s like a different player’: Some Everton fans think £22m man must do better
A number of Everton fans have been discussing Andre Gomes’ performance on Monday night as Carlo Ancelotti’s Toffees fell to defeat in London.
Everton headed to Tottenham Hotspur hoping to build on their decent post-restart record, having held Liverpool to a draw and winning over Norwich and Leicester.
Instead, the Toffees played out a dour game against Spurs, losing to an unlucky own goal as neither side offered much on the pitch.

The hosts took the lead in the 24th minute, with Michael Keane deflecting Giovani Lo Celso’s shot past Jordan Pickford.
Everton failed to go up the gears in the second half and Pickford had to be alert to keep the score down, saving from Son Heung-min twice.
Ancelotti post-match that the game was lost in the middle of the park and, indeed, the starting midfield of Gomes, Tom Davies and Gylfi Sigurdsson offered little in the first half.
The Italian after the break and, whilst Everton looked brighter and had more of the game, they still offered little in the final third.
It was hoped that Gomes would’ve been able to pull the strings in midfield and shield the back four.
However, the £ man’s influence diminished as the game went on, misplacing passes, conceding fouls and cutting an increasingly frustrated figure.
Obviously Gomes still needs time to get back to his best after his horrific leg injury, but Ancelotti and the fans will nonetheless have expected more from the Portuguese lynchpin on the night.
Below is some of the reaction to the player’s display:
It’s games like this you really want and need a player like Gomes to step up. Somehow he struggles to rise above the mediocrity

Gomes needs movement around him. Probably same can be said of Davies and Sigurdsson. One of these three need replacing for Gordon if we want to go on the attack. Sigurdsson for me.
But in summary, I trust Ancelotti to do what’s right.

I think it’s fair to say that Gomes is really not living up to hype of his loan season ? been shocking for a good while now

Gomes not good enough for me mate, he is a safety player. Even before his injury he scored 1 goal. If he was English he would be classed as winks and dier. Nothing special for me! If we want to make the next step.

I think he needs better players around him, then we’ll see more out of him

What’s going on with Gomes? Last season he was strong really good at passing forward. This season looks like a headless chicken and when he does get the ball gets all negative and passes the ball backwards. He’s like a different player.

Yourself and Gylfi need to work harder when we don’t have the ball. When we do have the ball you need to take responsibility and pass forwards. The defenders don’t want you to pass it back to them they want you to make something happen going forward.

Remember when Gomes used to find pockets of space in the oppositions half and open up a variety of attacking options?
He was a Rolls-Royce in his movement on and off the ball.
Will we ever see that Andre Gomes ever again?
