What Tottenham are now planning to do with Luka Vuskovic after Cristian Romero’s contract decision

Tottenham will be officially welcoming new signing Luka Vuskovic this summer.

Spurs agreed a deal with Hajduk Split to sign Luka Vuskovic back in 2023. However, as per Brexit rules, he could not move to play for Tottenham until he turned 18.

Since signing for Spurs, he has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising young defenders with outstanding performances. He spent last season at Belgian side Westerlo where he continued to impress.

Vuskovic has now been spotted in London as he joins his new club officially. And with the increasingly uncertain situation surrounding Cristian Romero, the Croatian’s immediate future at Tottenham has become a topic of discussion.

Romero is strongly linked with a move to Spain with reports claiming that Romero’s heart is set on a move to Atletico Madrid.

It has also been reported that Romero has refused to sign a new contract at Tottenham, making it clear that he wants to leave, not for money but to take the next step in his career.

Given the current situation surrounding the World Cup winner’s future at the club, Tom Barclay of reports that Thomas Frank will look closely at Vuskovic during pre-season and will be open to keeping him if the player impresses.

However, the report adds that a loan move away is likely, with the Bundesliga a potential destination. Newly promoted side Hamburg are among the sides leading with their interest in signing him on loan.

Tottenham’s centre-back situation

If Romero is to leave, Spurs will be left with Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso and veteran defender Ben Davies as available centre-backs.

Spurs also have Radu Dragusin, however, he is out injured and will not be back until December.

Tottenham have also been linked with Marc Guehi, a player who they have been after since January. Spurs made a bid to sign Guehi last January, but the bid was rejected.

Vuskovic has ample first-team experience for a player of his age and has consistently been performing, albeit the Premier League could be a tougher test for him.

It will be interesting to see if Spurs decide to keep him for the season or loan him out for further development.
