What Sunderland sources are now saying about Jordan Henderson returning this summer

There is a real possibility that Jordan Henderson could return to boyhood side Sunderland this summer, TBR Football can reveal.

Henderson left Sunderland many moons ago to join Liverpool back in 2011, a 34-year-old who is currently playing for Ajax in the Netherlands.

The England international amassed 79 senior appearances for his boyhood club as a youngster before departing for Anfield, where he somewhat became Steven Gerrard’s replacement.

Of course, Henderson won a Champions League and Premier League medal with Liverpool whilst earning 83 caps for his country — a brilliant career, albeit one that is now in its latter stages.

Henderson has a contract for one more year with Ajax, however, it’s broadly believed that the Sunderland-born midfielder will be on the move this summer.

That being said, TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey understands that Henderson really could be on his way back to the Stadium of Light.

In terms of Henderson’s options, Glasgow Rangers might also table an offer to Henderson if Gerrard is handed the manager job.

Rangers are considering re-appointing Gerrard as their new manager after a stint where he actually worked alongside Henderson at Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq.

Henderson also has interest from around Europe this summer and Cesc Fabregas’ Serie A side Como do like the former Liverpool captain.

However, a return to Sunderland is currently looking most likely should Henderson leave Ajax in the coming months.

Liverpool coach John Heitinga is currently in talks over the Ajax managerial vacancy, and perhaps that could play a part in Henderson’s decision over his future.

Jordan Henderson wanted to stay at Ajax in January

Of course, Henderson was actually asked about a return to Sunderland in January.

And whilst the 34-year-old stated his love for Sunderland, he was also keen to express that he had unfinished business at Ajax.

Henderson said: “It’s my club, ever since I was a boy of six or seven years old. Then I was in the stands. But I just hope I stay here (at Ajax). I really like it here.

“I want to help the club to grow further. We are also taking those steps. But I also read it (the transfer speculation). I don’t even know where all this comes from, because there has been no contact.”

Although, six months on Henderson might have now had a change of heart.

Sunderland want to keep Jobe Bellingham this summer, and perhaps fans are already dreaming of the youngster lining up alongside Henderson in midfield.
