What Spanish media are saying about Alejo Veliz after Tottenham striker goes three months without a goal

Alejo Veliz was one of the first players to join Tottenham Hotspur in their new era under Ange Postecoglou, a young Argentinian with a bright future ahead.

Prior to joining Tottenham in 2023, Veliz was playing for Rosario Central in Argentina, his boyhood club who he was beginning to score regularly for.

In total, Veliz netted 19 goals in 63 appearances for Rosario, a decent record for a very young striker at the time.

Now, after eight appearances and one goal for Spurs, Veliz is out on loan at Espanyol in La Liga, his second temporary spell in Spain.

In the second half of last season Veliz went to Sevilla, but was seldom afforded chances at a club who already had well established options like Youssef En-Nesryi.

Incidentally, Tottenham were interested in En-Nesyri at a similar time, a striker who is now at Fenerbahce.

Espanyol wanted to send Alejo Veliz back to Tottenham in January

That being said, Spanish experts were excited by Veliz at Espanyol initially, a level of club that was thought to be better suited to the Tottenham loanee.

Espanyol were newly-promoted back to the top flight and Veliz was seemingly set for big things with the club having been handed the #9 shirt.

However, after 21 games this season, the on-loan Spurs striker has only scored four times, with three of those strikes coming in the Copa del Rey.

In La Liga, Veliz has a record of one goal in 19.

Interestingly, reported last month that Espanyol were considering cutting Veliz’s season-long loan short, a scenario which was also appealing to Tottenham.

Spurs were said to be looking for a new destination for Veliz to finish the season, even if he did ultimately stay at Espanyol past the deadline.

Alejo Veliz branded as a ‘failure’ in latest Espanyol performance

Veliz last scored in an Espanyol shirt back in October, when he actually netted a hat-trick against lower division side San Tirso in the cup.

Since, it’s been a tale of frustration for Veliz who has predominantly been used as a substitute behind Spain under-21 international Roberto Fernandez.

Veliz played 45 minutes against Real Sociedad from the bench last weekend, but was unable to prevent a 2-1 defeat.

And in review of his performance, labelled Veliz as a ‘failure’, lamenting his finishing when a big chance came in his way.

The review did note that Veliz ‘fought for many aerial balls’ which is clearly a strength to his game, but it doesn’t seem to be working overall for the striker at Espanyol.

Tottenham will assess Veliz in pre-season once he returns, but it currently seems unlikely that he’ll be putting pressure on Dominic Solanke any time soon.
