What Saudi Pro League sources are saying about a move to sign Darwin Nunez from Liverpool

Saudi Pro League sources have denied any approach to sign Darwin Nunez from Liverpool, TBR Football can exclusively reveal.

Since Arne Slot’s appointment, Nunez has scored four goals in 26 appearances for Liverpool, two of which have come in the Premier League.

Slot has often experimented with using Luis Diaz as his starting striker with Cody Gakpo on the left, meaning Nunez is watching from the bench.

The Liverpool striker started against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup last weekend, but Nunez was then criticised by Robbie Fowler, who was firmly unimpressed with the forward.

Saudi Pro League deny Darwin Nunez bid

However, TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey can share that Saudi Pro League sources have denied any move for Nunez.

It has been claimed that the Pro League made a move for him and that Al-Hilal were ready to take him to the Middle East and had made an offer for the Uruguay international.

But sources connected with the Pro League have confirmed that no offer has been made and that there has been no contact with Liverpool regarding a deal.

The Pro League don’t deny that Nunez is the calibre of player they would like to sign, if he was to become available, but at this stage, that is not the case.

Of course, it also has to be considered whether the 25-year-old Liverpool striker would even be willing to swap Premier League football for a Saudi move.

It’s currently unclear whether Nunez would consider that seismic switch, should he depart Anfield in the near future.

Arne Slot has defended Darwin Nunez at Liverpool

Of course, one of the criticisms of Nunez in England has been his failure to take his chances in front of goal.

However, when speaking last month, Slot defended his striker, saying there’s much more to his game than just goalscoring.

Slot said: “For me, he has impact. If you only look at goals, he hasn’t scored the amount of goals that he wants to score, or we want a number nine to score, but he does have impact in his work-rate.

“He’s part of a team that scores a lot of goals and is winning a lot. Of course, as a number nine you want to score more goals and that’s definitely what he wants as well.

“But I’m not only judging Mohamed Salah on his goals and Darwin on his goals – I also judge them on their work-rate and what they bring to the team.

“The fans support him so much that maybe he wants it too much.”
