What really happened with Anthony Gordon and Liverpool

A journalist has set the record straight on what really happened between Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon and Liverpool.

It’s been a chaotic last few days for Liverpool and Newcastle United fans with Anthony Gordon for a moment looking like he was heading to Anfield.

As the financial year came to a close, Newcastle frantically tried to offload players to comply with Profit and Sustainability regulations.

They ended up sanctioning the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, ending the speculation around Gordon.

Now, a journalist has set the record straight on what actually happened with the England international.

Newcastle never offered Anthony Gordon to Liverpool

There have been a number of reports suggesting that Newcastle were in talks to sell Gordon to Liverpool and that they were willing to sanction his sale.

However, journalist Alex Crook has denied the rumours and made it clear that he was never actually for sale and that’s where talks ended.

“Newcastle did not offer Anthony Gordon to Liverpool and he was never close to leaving the club,Crook said.

“Brief conversation between clubs as Liverpool asked about Gordon’s availability (but) Newcastle stated player was not for sale that’s as far as it went.

So it seems the rumours heavily linking the former Everton man back to Merseyside were premature and his exit was never close, at any stage.

Newcastle were always confident of keeping Anthony Gordon

TBR exclusively reported in May that Newcastle had laughed off the idea that Gordon would depart this summer. They also shared the same feeling about Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes.

The Tynesiders were always confident of keeping their prized assets and that’s likely because they knew there were suitors for Minteh and indeed in the end, Anderson.

Now the club can start to look forward and turn their focus towards new signings as they look to return to European football.
