What people in Germany are saying about Mathys Tel after he joins Tottenham
Mathys Tel is the newest arrival at Tottenham after joining Spurs on transfer deadline day.
Tel changed his plans late in the day to join Tottenham on deadline day after Tel initially rejected a move to Spurs.
However, Ange Postecoglou convinced Tel to join Tottenham, and it would appear that Tel is set for plenty of first-team minutes at Tottenham.
Speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, Alasdair Gold has been discussing Tel ahead of his Spurs debut, and according to the journalist, people in Germany believe that the Frenchman would much rather play as a central striker rather than a left winger.

The position Mathys Tel wants to play for Tottenham
Gold shared what he’s been hearing from people in Germany about Tel.
The journalist says that the suggestion from people in Germany is that the Bayern Munich loanee would rather play centrally rather than on the wing.
“Also, if he has to play as a winger, people from Germany, the logic or the thinking is that he would probably prefer to be central as a striker more than a winger. But he probably would have pointed out to him, even if you play on the wing for me, you’re going to be getting in the box and you’re going to be scoring goals. Brendan Johnson is Spurs top goal scorer,” Gold said.
“So yeah, an interesting one. And then we’ve got the option. The option itself is an interesting thing.”
Mathys Tel record in different positions
Mathys Tel wants to play as a central striker for Tottenham, but it remains to be seen whether or not his wish will be granted.
It would make sense for Tel to lead the line for Spurs initially. After all, Dominic Solanke is injured at the moment.
However, upon Solanke’s return, Tel may be moved to the wing, and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Indeed, Tel actually has a better record on the wing than he does as a striker.
Mathys Tel record in different positions | Games | Goals | Assists |
Left wing | 34 | 8 | 5 |
Centre-forward | 33 | 5 | 1 |
Right wing | 14 | 4 | 1 |
Interestingly, Tel’s record as a right winger is better than his record on the left in terms of goals per game, so perhaps that’s something Tottenham should consider.
Tel looks to be an exciting young talent, and it will be interesting to see how Spurs utilise the forward in the coming months.
