How Newcastle insiders reacted to Liverpool approach for Alexander Isak as second potential problem arises for Magpies

TBR Football can exclusively confirm how Newcastle United have reacted to Liverpool making an approach for Alexander Isak.

The Magpies are currently in the process of trying to sign another striker in Hugo Ekitike, who has been in fine form for Eintracht Frankfurt.

However, Liverpool are also in pursuit of a centre-forward and, after weeks of being linked with Isak, they have now made contact with Newcastle.

TBR Football can also confirm what other problem Newcastle could come across even if they retain Isak’s services and successfully ward off Liverpool.

Newcastle not happy over Liverpool approach for Alexander Isak

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has confirmed that Liverpool have indeed made contact with Newcastle over Alexander Isak, as per sources from both clubs.

However, Newcastle insist that no bid has been submitted for Isak, and the Magpies have not welcomed Liverpool’s approach for the Swede.

Bailey exclusively told TBR Football: “Sources have made it clear all summer that Liverpool’s first choice, their dream No. 9 target, is Alexander Isak – that has not changed.

“Isak has been in talks over a new deal but no agreement has yet been reached.

“Newcastle are prepared to break their wage structure for him, but it is not that simple.”

Liverpool could turn attention to Hugo Ekitike

Liverpool are intent on bringing in a new centre-forward and, if they fail to land Isak, they are also keen on Ekitike – who is a key target for Newcastle.

Last week, TBR Football confirmed that Liverpool have been impressed by Ekitike and that he is indeed on their wish list.

“Liverpool appreciate Ekitike, as they do (Benjamin) Sesko and a few others,” Bailey continued.

“They know the market and what is available, but they won’t make their move until they know Isak is off the table and they have never believed he was to this point.

“If Isak rejects a new deal at Newcastle, there is something there and Liverpool think that.

“The only real way Newcastle can put this to bed is by getting Isak to pen this new deal – while no agreement is reached, Liverpool probably won’t go away.”
