What Mikel Arteta said when Thierry Henry questioned his progress as Arsenal manager back in 2021

It now looks increasingly unlikely that Arsenal will end their wait for a Premier League title under Mikel Arteta this season.

Having been pipped to the Premier League crown by Manchester City over the past two years, Arsenal are now falling short in their pursuit of Liverpool.

At the time of writing, Arteta’s side are 13 points behind the league leaders, a gap they almost certainly won’t be able to overcome.

Even if Arsenal had a 20-goal striker available right now, Liverpool are showing no signs of dropping points – all focus should now be on the Champions League.

Of course, that is a competition that’s also going to be incredibly difficult to win without Arsenal’s star forwards, a troubling situation all round.

Thierry Henry has questioned Arsenal’s progress under Mikel Arteta

That being said, Arsenal have no plans to replace Arteta, a reassuring message given that the Spaniard isn’t at fault for the club’s injury crisis nor the lack of recruitment in January.

Although, it is now interesting to revisit Thierry Henry’s comments from 2021 when he questioned the progress that Arsenal were making under Arteta.

The Gunners have come a long way since then, mounting two (and possibly three) serious title challenges, albeit ones that have failed.

Henry was speaking at a event just under four years ago and claimed that he wasn’t sure if the club were going in the ‘right direction’ under his former teammate.

The Arsenal legend said: “I don’t know if things are going in the right direction. I watched the Brighton game. Did you watch it?

“I’ve seen us beating Norwich before, winning at Burnley, beating Tottenham at home – because we always beat Tottenham at home.

“And, instead, we suffered. I was waiting to see the Brighton game, to see if we could have the ball and keep the ball, away from home, retaining possession, against a dangerous Brighton side.

“When we used to lose, even after I left the team, it was always said that Arsenal don’t have a Plan B and that they passed too much for the sake of passing.

“But I didn’t see that from Arsenal in the Brighton match. I saw Brighton do that.”

Mikel Arteta rebuffed Thierry Henry’s doubts

In response to those comments at a later press conference, Arteta respectfully ignored Henry’s words.

The Arsenal boss was asked whether he had read Henry’s comments to which he replied: “I haven’t, I am just hearing them from you.”

Then pressed for a response on Henry’s words, Arteta replied: “It’s just another opinion. You have to respect that.”

Of course, Arteta’s stance is now interesting today, given noise around the club’s failures and poor decision-making certainly hasn’t lessened.

Arsenal are reportedly set for a huge summer of spending, and perhaps that will be needed in order to keep Arteta invested in the club’s vision and ambition.
