What Mauricio Pochettino was ‘surprised’ about when he met Daniel Levy shortly after joining Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur fans certainly made their feelings towards Daniel Levy and the club’s board clear before and after Sunday’s win against Manchester United.

Tottenham fans marched the streets of N17 in their thousands in protest of Levy and ENIC, adorning banners saying: “24 years, 16 managers, 1 trophy, time for change.”

Levy is said to be hurt by those protests, and the Spurs chairman reportedly could step aside when he feels as if the moment is right.

Right now, Tottenham are 12th in the Premier League after beating Man United, and the club’s only realistic proposition of playing in Europe next season would be to win the Europa League.

Ange Postecoglou is under pressure himself right now, and perhaps his future could also hinge on continental success.

Mauricio Pochettino thought Daniel Levy was doing a ‘fantastic’ job in 2015

That being said, it is now interesting to revisit Mauricio Pochettino’s comments on Levy when he first joined the club over 10 years ago.

Pochettino remains a very popular figure in north London, and some fans even want the Argentinian back at the club.

Pochettino joined Spurs in 2014, and the following year he then shared an interesting insight into his perception of Levy when he first arrived in N17.

The former Tottenham boss was surprised by how ‘friendly’ and inviting Levy was, who he thought had a tough reputation of sacking managers.

Initially speaking about his contract negotiations, Pochettino said: “It was very tough, and he won.

“I negotiated with him and now I am very strong. I don’t have an agent. He offered the contract and I say yes or no or I want more. He has a reputation as a very hard businessman? It’s true. I can feel that.

“It was a big surprise when I met Daniel. Before, all I heard was that he sacked managers and he was very tough. Face-to-face he is very friendly and he has been very kind with me.

“The way that he suffers for Tottenham, for his club, for the fans – he is very sensitive in that but sometimes it’s difficult to show that to the media and our supporters.

“It’s very difficult to manage a big club like Tottenham and, in his position, it’s always difficult to be kind to everyone. But the job he has done is fantastic.”

Jermain Defoe thinks Daniel Levy will be ‘hurt’

Of course, we are now almost a decade on from those words, and it would now be interesting to hear Pochettino’s perspective on the club’s situation.

Speaking to recently, former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe appeared to have some sympathy for Levy’s position, who he thought would be ‘hurt’ by recent protests.

Defoe said: “He [Levy] will be hurt today. You have to be thick skinned but he will be hurt because he’s human.

“He’ll be thinking ‘I have given so much’. I do believe if you spoke to him, he’ll be hurt because of what he has put into the club.”

A difficult situation, and one that might not be solved any time soon.
