What Martin Odegaard has now said about Arsenal’s summer signing Mikel Merino

Arsenal can now put their summer transfer window to bed after Friday night marking the end of business until January.

Mikel Arteta‘s side now have to return their focus back onto the action on the pitch with a game against Brighton & Hove Albion coming up today.

Going into deadline day, there was a feeling around Arsenal that there was a lot more that could have been done.

With Arsenal said to be on red alert for a new forward, the search went on into the final hours of the window.

But Edu Gaspar was able to get his man with Raheem Sterling securing his loan move to Arsenal for the 2024/25 campaign.

But there is another signing which has really excited Martin Odegaard after sharing his role in getting the deal over the line.

Martin Odegaard delighted to see Arsenal sign Mikel Merino

Sterling was the final arrival at the Emirates on deadline day with Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto also joining Arsenal on loan.

Mikel Merino was another Arsenal arrival this week with the midfielder landing from Real Sociedad after weeks and weeks of negotiations.

And it seems as if Odegaard may have just played a role in helping to persuade the Spain international to make the move to north London.

Ahead of the game on Saturday against the Seagulls, the Arsenal captain has shared details of his phone calls to Merino ahead of his move to the club,

“It’s great to welcome Mikel Merino to the club. I played with him for one season at Real Sociedad when I was on loan there. He’s a great player, a great person and I have no doubt he will be a really strong addition to the squad on and off the pitch,” Odegaard told the Arsenal .

“The number of duels he wins is incredible and on top of that, he runs so much in every game. I had a great connection with him in Spain and we played very well together, so I’m really looking forward to playing with him again.

“I spoke to him a few times when his move here started to happen. I basically just said to him that I was there if he needed anything to settle into his new club, and how much I was looking forward to getting going again with him.”

Mikel Merino will miss weeks at Arsenal through injury

Odegaard may be excited to welcome Merino to the club, but he is going to have bide his time as Merino is currently injured.

It is believed that Merino could miss up to eight weeks of action at Arsenal as a result of the shoulder injury.

But it has to be remembered Merino is one of the players signed on a permanent deal with the two deadline day arrivals only in north London for the season.

And, so far, the Arsenal midfield has shown they are more than capable of holding things down until Merino is fully fit.
